The Florida Statewide Guardian ad Litem Program announces the first recipient of the “Impact Award”named in honor of the national law firm, Akerman LLP.

Alan Abramowitz, Executive Director of the Florida Statewide Guardian ad Litem (GAL) Program, announced today that the Florida Statewide Guardian ad Litem Program honored, Pensacola-based Child’s Best Interest Attorney, Kathryn Hochmuth with the 2016 Impact Award.

Named in honor of the national law firm Akerman LLP, the Impact Award recognizes an outstanding Child’s Best Interest Attorney who has demonstrated exemplary legal advocacy and innovative thinking that has greatly impacted the children that they serve. The award was presented at the 3rd Annual GAL Disabilities Training Conference in Orlando which brought together hundreds of legal professionals who advocate for abused, abandoned, and neglected children who have special needs.

In making the announcement Alan Abramowitz stated, “Kathryn Hochmuth has contributed significant legal advocacy improvements that support the GAL Program’s mission – I am for the Child. Kathryn’s passionate and persuasive advocacy is exemplary and she sets the standard for future Impact Award recipients to follow.”

“I’m honored to be the first recipient of the Impact Award,” Hochmuth said.  “Working for the Guardian ad Litem Program is a rewarding experience, and I am fortunate to be in a position to make a difference in the lives of abused, abandoned, or neglected children.  Their best interest is at the heart of what we do and why we do it.  I’m so appreciative to be recognized for my efforts.”

Over the past two years the GAL Program and the Florida Statewide GAL Foundation has partnered with Akerman LLP – a top 100 U.S law firm serving clients across the Americas.  This partnership was made possible through the National CASA Association and while this is a national partnership, there is no doubt that in Florida, the campaign has had the deepest impact due to the number of Akerman offices located throughout the state.

Examples of how much this campaign has helped include generous financial donations to our GAL Foundation and affiliated non-profits across the state and community activities like collecting school supplies for children.  In addition, lawyers and other professionals from their firm are signing up in impressive numbers to become volunteer Guardians ad Litem.

Akerman knows the government alone cannot meet the needs of Florida’s abused, abandoned, and neglected children.  This past September the firm committed to pledging $1 million dollars to the CASA/GAL network over the next six years.  This latest commitment speaks to Akerman’s dedication to the GAL Program and the children we serve.  In honor of their commitment, we will be presenting the Impact Award annually to a Child’s Best Interest Attorney at the Statewide GAL Disabilities Training Conference.
