“It gives the child someone who they can ultimately trust and someone that will be a voice for them in court or otherwise and someone who really knows what they want, what they’re thinking. That’s very important. The initial training for the volunteers was very helpful and very extensive in detail and I think that set a good foundation for me in terms of what to expect.”

“You’re pushed to here and you’re pushed there and if you don’t have somebody advocating for you, then you’re just stuck. So they read your file just like everybody else, but they don’t strictly read it and then that defines you. They actually ask you, “How are you? What are your plans in life? What do you want?” My guardian ad litem would speak on my behalf of how I’m doing in school, or if there was anything that I needed.”

“I think the misconception that people have about Guardian ad Litem is that it’s going to be emotionally draining. You’re meeting the children that you’re working with. They’re not a piece of paper. They’re not a name on a page. It’s an actual person. I’m very confident that you’ll do one case and you’ll just fall in love.”
