Our Stories

“It gives the child someone who they can ultimately trust and someone that will be a voice for them in court or otherwise and someone who really knows what they want, what they’re thinking. That’s very important. The initial training for the volunteers was very helpful and very extensive in detail and I think that set a good foundation for me in terms of what to expect.”

“They were telling me that I would get a person. They called it a special person. I didn’t know what it really meant. Then I met Tom at court and he was telling me about what they do and who they are and what they’re here for. He said that they would be kind of like my voice through court and everything. He was there to help me and cope with everything’s going to be okay in that it’s not a bad place to be.”

“You’re pushed to here and you’re pushed there and if you don’t have somebody advocating for you, then you’re just stuck. So they read your file just like everybody else, but they don’t strictly read it and then that defines you. They actually ask you, “How are you? What are your plans in life? What do you want?” My guardian ad litem would speak on my behalf of how I’m doing in school, or if there was anything that I needed.”

Pro Bono Stories

“I think the misconception that people have about Guardian ad Litem is that it’s going to be emotionally draining. You’re meeting the children that you’re working with. They’re not a piece of paper. They’re not a name on a page. It’s an actual person. I’m very confident that you’ll do one case and you’ll just fall in love.”

Volunteer Stories

“The situations they’re in are not situations that they have chosen to be in, or they want to be in. You are the eyes and the ears representing this child, to be there for them and stand up for them. You don’t need any experience, you don’t need any background in any particular area. “

Helping Children

“With each placement that I went to, I learned something new. But at the same time, I went into a deeper depression. The guardian ad litem stood up for me. I doubted myself, and she was able to convince me that I am something and I will be something.
